Three-dimensional borehole radar imaging using synthetic aperture time-domain focusing

چکیده
For efficient mine planning and economic assessment, knowledge of subsurface structures ahead of mining in 3D and with high resolution is very useful. Tools such as 3D seismology have been adapted from the oil industry and applied to the planning of ultra-deep mines, but these tools lack the resolution to reveal <20 m features that hazard mine workings (Pretorious et al., 1997). Three-dimensional orebody geometry estimates derived from coring never have sufficient detail, due to lateral inhomogeneity. Trials in mines have established that wideband VHF borehole radars, working in the 10-100 MHz band, can be used to probe the rockmass between boreholes over ranges from <5m to as much as 150m with submetre resolution (Mason et al., 2001).

Three-dimensional Borehole Radar Imaging
Before embarking on any mining operation, it is advantageous to locate the subsurface orebody in three-dimensions with a high resolution (~1m) ahead of actual mining, because this will increase productivity and efficiency. Borehole radar is such an emerging mapping tool in the mining industry, that can be used to image the subsurface orebody with high resolution. 3-D subsurface imaging using tw...
متن کاملA Review of the Three-dimensional Field Displacement Retrieval Methods Using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Observations (InSAR) With Emphasis on the Precision of Each of these Methods
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology provides a useful tool for quantitatively measuring the deformation of the earth, influenced by natural factors (earthquake, subsidence, and landslide) and human factors (construction of structures, drilling, and the overexploitation of underground water aquifers). In this context, time-series analysis of radar images allows the monito...
متن کاملSpeckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Using Laplace Distribution
Speckle is a granular noise-like phenomenon which appears in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images due to coherent properties of SAR systems. The presence of speckle complicates both human and automatic analysis of SAR images. As a result, speckle reduction is an important preprocessing step for many SAR remote sensing applications. Speckle reduction can be made through multi-looking during the...

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) equipment is a radar imaging system that can be used to create high resolution images of a scene by utilising the movement of a flying platform. Knowledge of the platform’s trajectory is essential to get good and focused images. An emerging application field is real-time SAR imaging using small and cheap platforms with poorer navigation systems implying unfocused ...
متن کاملA VLSI Implementation for Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Processing
A simple physical model for the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is presented. This model explains the one dimensional and two dimensional nature of the received SAR signal in the range and azimuth directions. A time domain correlator, its algorithm and features are explained. The correlator is ideally suited for VLSI implementation. A real time SAR architecture using these correlators is propose...
